Dean Golja – Correspondence
Correspondence is a new photographic and moving-image work by Australian artist Dean Golja, developed through a residency at Atelijeri Žitnjak.
The work begins with a simple question: what does it mean to see indirectly?
Its title carries two related meanings. Correspondence is communication across distance– something received through fragments, delay and interpretation. It also refers to Emanuel Swedenborg’s idea of correspondences, in which visible things may carry relations to conditions that are not themselves immediately seen.
Golja brings this older idea into an unexpected dialogue with quantum ghost imaging, a contemporary imaging process in which an image can emerge through the correlation of information rather than conventional optical seeing. The science is not illustrated or reproduced. Instead, it provides a quiet provocation for photography: perhaps an image is not simply something captured, but something formed through relationships.
By way of images in small clusters, projected moving image, light and sound, Correspondence explores these relationships between what is present and absent, what is seen and what must be inferred. Developed for the particular spaces of Žitnjak, the exhibition remains deliberately open and experimental.
At its centre is photography’s enduring invitation: to look again, more slowly, and remain open to what an image might yet reveal.

Dean Golja — Correspondence

Dean Golja is an Australian artist, photographer and educator. Across three decades, his practice has treated photography less as documentation than as an act of discovery, an encounter with what resists direct observation. He is currently undertaking PhD research at Deakin University, Behold: The Abiding Spirit in Photography and has exhibited across Australia, China, Europe and the UAE, writing for FRAMES magazine alongside a parallel life in higher education and creative direction.
